UPSC Indian Forest Services Exam Pattern

The UPSC Indian Forest Service (IFS) examination consists of three stages: the Preliminary Examination, the Main Examination, and the Personality Test (Interview).

Preliminary Examination:

  • The Preliminary Examination is an objective-type examination consisting of two papers.
  • Paper-I: General Studies (200 marks, 2 hours duration)
  • Paper-II: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) (200 marks, 2 hours duration)
  • Both papers are of qualifying nature, but the marks obtained in Paper-I are used to determine the candidate’s eligibility for the Main Examination.

Main Examination:

  • The Main Examination is a written examination consisting of six papers, including two optional papers chosen by the candidate.
  • Paper-I: General English (300 marks, 3 hours duration)
  • Paper-II: General Knowledge (300 marks, 3 hours duration)
  • Paper-III: Optional Subject Paper 1 (200 marks, 3 hours duration)
  • Paper-IV: Optional Subject Paper 2 (200 marks, 3 hours duration)
  • Paper-V: Optional Subject Paper 3 (200 marks, 3 hours duration)
  • Paper-VI: Optional Subject Paper 4 (200 marks, 3 hours duration)
  • The optional subjects for the Main Examination include subjects such as Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Forestry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, and Zoology.

Personality Test (Interview):

  • Candidates who qualify in the Main Examination are called for a Personality Test, also known as the Interview.
  • The Interview is conducted to assess the candidate’s suitability for the Indian Forest Service.
  • The Interview carries a total of 300 marks.

The Main Examination is subjective in nature, and the optional subjects chosen by the candidates determine the specific subjects they need to prepare for. The marks obtained in the Main Examination and the Interview are used for the final selection and determination of the candidate’s rank.
